Extreme Makeover: The White House Edition
Though he’s been in office for less than a year, President Barack Obama has made it very clear that he chooses to handle things in a less traditional, dare I say, more stylish way. From financial and healthcare issues, to the ongoing war in Afghanistan, Obama doesn’t play by the rules and quite frankly, doesn’t give a rip about what anyone else thinks. He takes the route he feels best, no matter what others may say, similar to that of a fashion-forward entity and all around trendsetter. Obama, a trendsetter? I would definitely say so.
So it should come as no surprise that during the recent makeover of his executive palace, he held nothing back and chose pieces and accessories that displayed his personal style and taste. Plain portraits hung on the walls? Generic home accessories? I think not. He and the rest of the family proved their impeccable taste by choosing to decorate the interior of their presidential digs with art by Rothko, Diebenkorn and Degas. Rothko’s “Red Band,” Diebenkorn’s “Berkeley No. 52,” and other impressive pieces now hang from the White House walls, contributing to a sophisticated, cool, and stylish environment. The pieces were pulled from the National gallery of Art, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The family made sure as to not take from the enjoyment of other art enthusiasts, by choosing only pieces that were in museum storage.
The Obamas are clearly an impeccable family with impeccable taste. I can’t speak for everyone else, but for me, it’s pretty exciting that the man who runs our country has style of his own. A plain presidential family-a definite don’t. But one with style who sets trends and takes risks- a definite do.
