Gap Founders’ Art Collection Finds Home
by Stephanie Wilson

Founders of the U.S. brand Gap Donald and Doris Fisher have amassed quite the art collection over the years, one which grew way too large to house in their personal estates. The collection is an 1,100-piece assortment of works by 185 contemporary artists with many fine pieces from Alexander Calder, Roy Lichtenstein, Chuck Close and Andy Warhol and could be worth nearly $1 billion. The Fishers have been trying to found their own museum in San Francisco’s Presidio to house the collection, but they changed their minds when they received some objections from residents and city officials.

But there is good news for this: the Fishers have found a permanent home for their collection at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Donald Fisher released a written statement that said in part: “San Francisco is where we raised our family and opened our first Gap store, and we want to give back to the city we love by sharing the art that means so much to us.”
