The 10 Best New Buildings of 2008
As we near the end of the calendar year, in typical fashion, many outlets have chosen to reflect on the “Best of” in a variety of industries. While most “Best of” lists are quite trite, when The New Yorker’s Paul Goldberger compiled a list of the 10 best new architectural structures of 2008, we did take notice. His list is below; I included links to any of the buildings that we covered over the course of the year. Feel free to add your own choices for the best new buildings in the comments field.
1. Herzog and de Meuron’s extraordinary Olympic Stadium
2. Norman Foster’s Beijing Airport
3. Rem Koolhaas and Ole Scheeren’s headquarters of CCTV, the Chinese television network
4. Renzo Piano’s California Academy of Sciences, in San Francisco (check back in January 2009 for our profile of this building)
5. SANAA Architecture’s New Museum on the Bowery, in New York
6. Frank Gehry’s Art Gallery of Ontario
7. Skidmore partner Craig Hartman’s Cathedral of Christ the Light, in Oakland
8. Gwathmey Siegel’s Paul Rudolph’s Art and Architecture Building, at Yale
9. Walter Sedovic’s Eldridge Street Synagogue, on the Lower East Side
10. Olafur Eliasson’s New York Waterfalls Project
