Karim Rashid for Veuve Clicquot

Veuve Cliquot glows under the light of the best in contemporary design this summer, as the historically prestigious brand unveils the Globalight at W Hotels across the nation. Design luminary Karim Rashid has lent his expertise to create the limited-edition portable Champagne cooler and lantern to spotlight the company’s Rosé Champagne. An adjustable pink light emanates from center of the elliptical cooler onto the showcased bottle, radiating a rich warm hue that showcases the function of the isothermal cooler. Its portability promises endless possibilities for both outdoor and indoor luxury for up to four hours at a time.

Rashid, a Cairo-born designer who holds court in his private design studio in New York, has designed the cooler, which epitomizes his über-contemporary philosophy. Rashid’s portfolio includes hotel and restaurant interiors and more than 2,000 design objects. Fourteen museums worldwide count Rashid’s work in their permanent collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Time magazine called him the “poet of plastic.”

Rashid believes design has the potential to change the world and how we experience it and his sleek, elemental ultra-modern aesthetic dovetails with this point of view. He claims that as a society, we ought to live in the here-and-now, unencumbered by nostalgia, kitsch, ritual, and tradition. With this project, he conceptually strips down French chandeliers, and the cooler is his modern interpretation of the historical staple.

Veuve Cliquot brings substantial historical weight to the project, with 236 years of producing fine spirits in Reims, France, under its belt. The fine Champagne was once the beverage of choice for European nobility and is now the selection of choice for bon vivants worldwide. In partnership with Rashid, the Champagne house continues a tradition of bold sophistication.

This is not the first time Rashid and the Maison have united for art’s sake. In 2007, Rashid designed the Clicquot Loveseat, a reinterpretation of an 18th-century armchair in honor of Veuve Clicquot Rosé. Two giant pink flower petal-shaped chairs join above a chrome plated pedestal-an ice bucket shaped like a pistil in classic Clicquot yellow.

The W Hotel is the ideal venue to discover the Globalight, which brings warm and cold at harmony, chilling Champagne under a warm glow, as the hotels entice visitors to “feel the warmth of cool.” As such, 500 Globalights are available for purchase exclusively at W Hotels The Store, www.whotelsthestore.com and www.e-clicquot.com at a suggested retail price of $4,500.
