August 2004 marked the end of an era; The Plaza Hotel, a New York landmark, was sold for the price of $675 million. Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal, the fourth richest person in the world, and Millennium & Copthorne Hotels sold The Plaza to real estate developer Elad Group.
Since its opening in 1907, The Plaza has welcomed many notable guests, including Marilyn Monroe, The Beatles, and Frank Lloyd Wright. The Plaza’s grand ballroom was the setting of Truman Capote’s Black and White Ball and the wedding of Richard Nixon’s daughter Julie. Many movie scenes were also shot at the hotel including North by Northwest, Barefoot in the Park, and the unforgettable The Way We Were.
The Plaza offers condos as well as $1,000-per-night suites, which feature 24-karat gold plated bathroom faucets, chandeliers, white-glove butler service on every floor, and many other amenities. Despite its glitz and glamour – one tenant has already complained that getting stuck in the garbage room is not commensurate to sipping Dom Pérignon in the legendary Oak Bar, which, by the way, is not open until May.
