Hamptons Living
by Jamie Grill

As the summer season commences, so does the annual flock of city dwellers to the Hamptons. If an escape to the beach is not enough to help you unwind, than these estates, all offering luxurious pools to refresh and relax in, should do the trick.

Architect Goodhue Livingston’s Old Trees estate is comprised of 10.44 acres swathed in elegance on the shores of Lake Agawam. Situated between Southampton Village and the beach of the Atlantic Ocean, the sweeping views of the estate extend from the approximately 458-foot shoreline of Lake Agawam out to the ocean’s surf.
Built in 1911, this stately Georgian jewel offers more than 15,000 square feet with 12 bedrooms. A central great hall introduces you to the home and French doors lead into the grand living room. From there, you enter the library, which features a fireplace set into oak wainscoting below a strapwork plaster ceiling embellished in a fleur-de-lys motif. The formal dining room can easily accommodate 60 guests in a garden-like atmosphere with hand-painted Gracie wallpaper and French doors that expand the bright space for alfresco dining. The master suit provides a restful escape from socializing with a deck viewing the lake, a sitting room, and a Carrara marble bath.

Outside, expansive south lawns can host an event for hundreds of guests. The lakeside terrace, flanked with pillared pavilions, sits aside the pool, spa, and spacious pool house containing a sitting area and full bath with a changing room. Your guests can enjoy their own pool from the “Tulip Cottage” with three bedrooms, two baths, a full kitchen, and a living room. As your guests exit through their French doors, they will greeted by their own private bluestone-terraced pool.

Morio Nievera, landscape architect, has transformed the estate into a dreamlike horticultural treasure. Specimen trees on the estate include Japanese cedar, dogwood, and weeping beech. Your visitors will adore sipping on cocktails in the secret garden with the smell of roses wafting in the air or having a match in the Har-True tennis court with spectators pavilion. The 1800’s barn has been converted to provide another venue for social gatherings in the enormous dance hall.
